Private travel in Spain

The country Amble was built in

Amble started in Spain. Not with a route or a product, but with a handful of people who let us into their cellars, their kitchens and their families — and who kept saying yes, year after year, because of how the guests we brought behaved once they were through the door.

Everything Amble does elsewhere is built on what those relationships taught us. Spain is where we learned that the good stuff is rarely listed, that a winemaker will give you an afternoon they would never give a coach party, and that the difference between a nice trip and an unforgettable one is almost always a person.

It is still the country we know most completely: the longest relationships, the deepest bench of Local Legends, and the widest range of what we can open — from a Priorat grower's terraces to a market stall in Madrid where the owner has known us for years.

Explore Spain through relationships, not bookings.

Where we travel in Spain

Four regions, each entered through the people inside it

Spend a whole journey in one, or move between them. Madrid either side of a wine region is the shape many guests settle on, and Catalonia and the Basque Country pair naturally over a week.

Catalonia

Penedès, Priorat and the coast — the region we know best

Where Amble started, and still the region with the most doors. Penedès for the growers working in clay and reviving old varieties, Priorat for slate terraces so steep they are worked by hand, Sitges for a coastline that cooks what it catches that morning. Amphorae makers, fifth-generation vermouth distillers, oyster farmers, castellers. Barcelona sits an hour away when you want it.

The Basque Country

The most concentrated food culture in Europe, and the wines beside it

Nowhere eats like this. Pintxos bars where each counter has one thing worth crossing the city for, cider houses where you drink straight from the barrel and the steak arrives whole, txakoli poured from height on the coast at Getaria. Rioja Alavesa's bodegas sit just over the hills, which is why we usually build the two together.

La Rioja & Ribera del Duero

Tempranillo, two ways, and the cellars underneath the towns

Spain's classic wine country, and more varied than its reputation suggests. In Haro, bodegas that have been in the same families for a century and a half sit within a few streets of each other. In Ribera del Duero, altitude and cold nights make something denser and more austere. Underneath both, the calados — old cellars cut into the rock beneath the towns, where a good deal of the tasting happens.

Madrid

Wine bars, a cooking class, and wineries an hour from the city

Madrid drinks better than almost anywhere in Spain. We build tastings in the wine bars that take it most seriously, and pair them with a cooking class that sends you home able to make what you have been eating all week. Go an hour out of the city and there are working wineries and estates most visitors never hear about — enough for a full day in the vineyards and back for dinner.

We only go where we know the people

Access, introductions and relationships

You travel with someone already inside the region

You are accompanied by a wine specialist who moves with you through cellars, vineyards and tables, connecting what you experience as it happens.

At certain moments others join — a producer, a maker, a chef — adding depth from within their own work. That might take place inside production, through hands-on craft, or in the wider context of the region itself.

One person holds the thread throughout, so each part connects without interruption. Nobody is working from a script, and there is no group to keep pace with — it is the difference between being shown a place and being taken into it.

What that makes possible

Four things you couldn't arrange yourself

Cellars

Doors with no tasting room

A great deal of the best wine in Spain is made at estates that never receive visitors. The visit happens because of who asks, not because a slot was free.

Makers

Time with the person who made it

Poured by the family who farmed it, in their own cellar or at their own table, at the pace of a conversation rather than a tour.

Tables

Meals arranged, not booked

A long lunch at a bodega, a private kitchen in Madrid, a cider house table, a fisherman cooking what he landed that morning. Menu and wines chosen for your group.

Shape

One region, or all four

A single day with a sommelier in Penedès, or a fortnight across Spain with private transport between regions and no fixed schedule once you are there.

How it feels

Depth rather than volume

  • Fewer visits, with more time in each place
  • Conversations that unfold naturally
  • Experiences shaped by presence rather than schedules
  • A pace that allows for spontaneity and discovery

Spain rewards patience, trust and connection. This is a more personal, less transactional way of travelling — and it suits people who value depth and detail over a full itinerary.

What to expect on investment

$1,000 – $1,500 per person, per dayGuide price for the Amble experience · accommodation costed separately

Every private journey is priced according to your group size, the length of the trip and the experiences we design together. As a guide, plan for a minimum average of $1,000 to $1,500 per person per day depending on the region — covering your Local Legend host, private transport, tastings and a hosted lunch.

Accommodation is costed separately and tailored to your preferences, from estate hotels in the Penedès vineyards to town houses in San Sebastián and city hotels in Madrid. You will have a full, transparent proposal before you commit to anything.

Amble Journeys Ltd is a member of Protected Trust Services, member no. 5978. Every payment you make is held in a trust account and financially protected until your trip is complete.

How it comes together

From first conversation to arrival

01

Start with a conversation

Tell us how you want to travel — the pace, the regions, and the moments that matter most. Share a few details and we will set up a call.

02

We design your journey

An outline itinerary built around access, flow and the people who will bring it to life. A $500 planning fee, applied in full to your trip cost, begins detailed planning.

03

We refine the details

We adjust, add and shape until it feels exactly right. Once you are happy, a 50% deposit secures your booking.

04

You arrive

Your final balance is due 90 days before departure. From there we handle everything, so you can simply arrive and experience it.

We read every enquiry ourselves and reply within two working days. Nothing is committed at this stage — the first step is a conversation.
