Oaxaca Travel & Experiences

A More Personal Way to Experience Burgundy

Oaxaca is not understood through landmarks alone.

Its culture lives in working kitchens, market stalls, village workshops, agave fields and the traditions carried forward by the people who practise them.

Amble’s small-group journey enters this world through local relationships. Hosted by Oaxacan chef Enrique Montaño, it brings guests into kitchens, studios, palenques and dining rooms where food, craft and history are shared with context.

Explore Oaxaca through the people who cook, make and preserve its traditions.

Exploring Oaxaca Through Its People

  • Food and Table - Move through Oaxaca’s markets, family kitchens and dining rooms with cooks and chefs who connect ingredients to agricultural cycles, family histories and traditional techniques.

  • Craft and Village Traditions - Spend time with makers working in black clay, textiles and carved wood, including visits connected to the artisan traditions of Teotitlán del Valle and Oaxaca’s surrounding communities.

  • Mezcal and the Agave Landscape - Visit small artisanal palenques and experience mezcal in the place where it is made, guided by people who understand the relationship between agave, landscape, fire and time.

Each offers a different way into Oaxaca, while together they reveal how closely the region’s food, craft, land and communities are connected.

Why Oaxaca Feels Different

Oaxaca’s defining traditions are not separated from everyday life.

  • Markets remain central to how people cook, trade and gather

  • Food carries agricultural, Indigenous and family knowledge

  • Particular villages are closely associated with distinct forms of craft

  • Mezcal begins with the land and the people who understand it

  • Ancient history continues to influence contemporary life and creativity

A meal, textile, clay vessel or glass of mezcal is rarely just one thing. Each carries the story of a place, a process and the people responsible for continuing it.

Access, Introductions, and Local Relationships

The journey is hosted by Enrique Montaño, a chef and traditional cook from Tlalixtac de Cabrera who brings Oaxaca’s food culture into focus throughout the week.

At different moments, other Local Legends join the group - traditional cooks, chefs, artisans, mezcal makers and cultural specialists who speak from within their own work.

Their presence adds more than information. It allows each experience to connect to a wider understanding of Oaxaca, rather than feeling like a series of separate visits.

A Slower, More Considered Way to Travel

The Oaxaca journey is limited to 12 guests.

  • Time to gather around one table

  • Workshops where questions and conversation can unfold

  • Fewer people inside kitchens, studios and palenques

  • Meals enjoyed without being hurried

  • Space to understand the story behind what is being made

This scale allows the journey to feel closely hosted while leaving room to experience Oaxaca at a more natural pace.

Entering Oaxaca Through Its Working Environments

This journey is not built around staged demonstrations or a checklist of Oaxaca’s best-known sights.

It moves through the environments where the region’s culture continues to take shape: markets where ingredients are chosen, smoke-filled kitchens where corn and chiles are transformed, studios where clay and wool are worked by hand, and palenques where agave becomes mezcal.

Along the way, Monte Albán places these living traditions within the longer story of the Zapotec world and the valleys below it.

Through Enrique and the Local Legends who join the journey, guests experience Oaxaca with the people capable of explaining not only what they are seeing, but why it matters.
